Loco Moco is a classic Hawaiian comfort food, typically made with rice, a hamburger patty, a fried egg, and brown gravy. Here‘s a simple recipe to make it at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked white rice (preferably sticky rice or short-grain rice)
  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter version)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for binding)
  • 1 egg (for each serving)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for frying)

Gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth (or chicken broth)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the rice:

Cook your rice according to the package instructions, so it’s warm and ready to go when you’re assembling the loco moco.

2. Make the hamburger patties:

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs (if using), and a pinch of salt and pepper. Shape the mixture into 2-4 patties (depending on how big you want them). Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until fully cooked through and browned on the outside. Set aside.

3. Make the gravy:

In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to create a roux, cooking for about 1-2 minutes until it turns golden brown. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and soy sauce (if using), and let the gravy simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened. Add salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm.

4. Fry the eggs:

In a separate pan, heat a little oil or butter over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the pan and cook them sunny-side up or to your desired level of doneness. (You can also scramble if you prefer.)

5. Assemble the loco moco:

In each serving bowl, start with a scoop of rice. Place a cooked hamburger patty on top of the rice. Top with a fried egg. Pour the gravy generously over everything.

Optional toppings:

Sliced green onions or chopped parsley for garnish

Sriracha or hot sauce for a spicy kick

A drizzle of ketchup for a little tangy sweetness

Serve hot and enjoy your delicious loco moco!
